Nothing says Memorial Day quite like unearthing and clearly displaying the very reason the internet exists in the first place. You might think it’s to encourage near-real-time communications, enable business to address global markets, remove time and culture barriers, or to build incredible applications for organizations of all stripes.
It’s not any of those. The reason the internet exists is to bring you fine HTTP wares such as these:
LOST re-enacted by cats in one minute.
Xtreme eating 2010. It never fails to shock me how many calories restaurants can pack into their processed entrees. The scariest part? These go up ever year, not down.
A. J. Jacobs decides to kick his addiction to chronic multitasking and go pure unitask for a month. (Unsolicited side note: I can relate to this problem, as I have a task list that’s nearly 50 items deep. Task management is a huge issue for knowledge workers today, and largely the reason GTD is so successful.)
37signals on working remotely.
This week’s Wikipedia deep-thought-inducer: The Coastline Paradox.
Boston.com’s The Big Picture has some stunning images of Saturn, taken from NASA’s Cassini. Images include Saturn’s moons, sunlight glinting off a lake on Titan and cryovolcanism on Enceladus. Amazing. Even if you’re not an astronomy buff…amazing.
Children’s menus: the death of civilization. As a parent of an almost six-year-old, I couldn’t agree more. Every children’s menu is the same: hamburger, mac and cheese, chicken tenders, spaghetti, hot dog. I’m proud to say that my son will eschew stuff like this for half of my curry Pad Thai. How are we supposed to cultivate a real appreciation for food and culture when everything is processed white flour, deep fried or loaded with white sugar?
Finally, for you Idol fans out there, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox have already inked major deals. Good for them; they’re both fantastic artists.
Have a great holiday weekend, everyone.
