Aside from the sudden but obvious realization that summer is, in fact, dead, the best thing I have to share with you this week are some pretty fantastic links. Enjoy.
- Science does not back up the “cool down” theory of exercise/training, and likewise scientists say that ‘lactic acid theory’ is bunk.
- Like apples? Here’s a taste test of the six major varieties you’ll find at your local market right now.
- “Twenty-seven hours into the world’s toughest footrace, things really started to get interesting.”
- One of Flickr’s co-founder’s argues that hard work is overrated and possibly detrimental. A modern slacker’s anthem? Not so fast – neuroscience offers some backing for idea.
- E-books come into their own when they connect a reader to everything else a favorite author has written.
- Simon Attwater turns regular shopping lists into amazing pieces of typographical art.
- Amazon introduces same-day delivery in several markets: New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Seattle. (Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix are next). The best part? It’s only $6 if you’re an Amazon Prime member.
- Some employees of the webmag Double X wondered how it would work out if they drank as much in the workplace as do the characters on Mad Men. It didn’t work out quite like it does in the show.
- Calvin Trillin’s ‘smart guys’ theory on Wall Street’s collapse.
- Pompaloose covers Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’. This is what is increasingly becoming known as production-as-performance art.
- Business karma: the airlines that decided to charge extra fees in the past few months saw their revenue decline the most. Reminds me of the old saw, the tighter you grip, the more sand falls through your fingers.
- Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention two movies that I am absolutely dying to see. The first is Where The Wild Things Are, based off Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book. (And no, he won’t entertain any questions about whether the movie’s too scary for kids.) The second is Paranormal Activity, because even at 40 years old, I’m a tremendous sucker for a good horror movie.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
