Oracle 11g and Spatial Business Intelligence

Oracle 11g and Spatial Business Intelligence

With Oracle 11g, you can take your business intelligence to the next level with spatial business intelligence. What does that mean?  It’s simply a name for a set of features that allow you to view key data based upon that data being graphically represented on maps which depict state level, regional level, country level, etc.

But, as the old saw goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.  So hop on over here and check out a demo of the mapviews functionality to really see what I’m talking about.

There are a wide variety of uses of this functionality. Some examples and ideas are outlined below:

1. For a utility, this new feature could be utilized to show the frequency of maintenance activity in a given area. For example, increased maintenance activity could allow a utility to conduct the appropriate investigation as to why assets in a given location are requiring more maintenance. That information certainly could result in many proactive actions such as replacement of assets, increased preventative maintenance or redeployment of maintenance resources.

2. For a sales organization, mapviews can provide great visual insight:

  • Regionally or by sales representative the concentration of sales success can be easily identified. Or on the flip side, regions or sales representatives with poor results can also be identified. This information can allow an organization to take corrective action or duplicate success models.
  • Pricing or profit differences across a state, region, country can be seen graphically allowing an organization to make sound business decisions to reallocate product or understand the reasons behind differences in profit.

3. For a manufacturing organization the key suppliers and/or materials and those locations/prevalence across an area can be analyzed. The differences between costs of materials can be analyzed or delivery times or supplier performances. All of this information on a spatial standpoint can be viewed, analyzed and key business decisions can be made to improve supplier/material performance for the manufacturing process.

With geolocation data being put to such smart use in the consumer tech markets, spatial business intelligence is the enterprise-grade extension of the same data richness.  It’s an exciting set of tools, and the challenge organizations will have will be correctly identifying the problems this data can help visualize or solve.  If you want to discuss this further, or have any questions about what this can do for your organization, I’m available, as always.  Don’t hesitate to contact me.
