While many of my blogs are about PeopleSoft and Business Intelligence, a personal passion of mine is support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). At age 6, my youngest daughter Lauren was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, as soon as I realized, I started to research on how to reverse diabetes. It was a life changing moment for not only her, but our entire family. Now at age 9 she continues to do well but the disease certainly changes not only her lifestyle but our entire family’s as well. Diabetes is a manageable disease, but certainly not without its complications and potential dangers. A cure is desperately needed as this disease impacts more children.
Three years ago a JDRF walk was started in my hometown of Bay City, MI and my family was an inaugural, active participant. The walk is held in beautiful Bay City along the riverfront where over 1,000 people come to support the walk and outdoor festivities in a wonderful location. Here is a short video displaying the beauty and features of the walk area. With the support of great communities and those who live in them, we are getting closer and closer to a cure.
If you would like to see what a small community can do when it gathers steam for an important cause, come join us on October 7th at 9:30 AM at Bay City Veterans Memorial Park. Here is a Google Map.
Of course, what would one of my blogs be without some information. If you are unfamiliar with the disease, here is a great link to a video explaining type 1 diabetes. Actually, there are some fairly complex calculations related to the amount and timing of insulin delivery vs. activity, food, type of food, time of day etc. We use real-world business intelligence to monitor Lauren’s blood glucose levels over periods of time. Reports, dashboards and metrics are all used to make sure blood sugar levels are in line with goals.
I’ll be sure to check back in and update on the success of our walk!
