Oracle has begun to offer ‘Feature Packs’ between planned major releases to deliver new capabilities and value to customers. If you’re not aware of this (and you should be), here’s the information about the Oracle Feature Pack program.
With the release of the PeopleSoft 9.1 Feature Pack in Spring 2011, Oracle now offers “significant new features and capabilities to PeopleSoft 9.1 customers prior to their inclusion in PeopleSoft Enterprise 9.2”. What does this mean? Here’s the official Oracle press release, and here’s some information talking about early access updates to Oracle’s PeopleSoft Financial Management apps.
There’s a lot of good new information here. Be sure to check out the above links for the details.
But I’ll single one out that’s particularly interesting: a new feature of note is the ability to now use the PeopleSoft application, through Asset Management or Maintenance Management, to locate one or more assets or work orders on a map via integration to ESRI ArcGIS integration (Geographic Information System) integration. What does this mean? It means the visualization of assets and work orders on a map that can lead to more effective organization, scheduling, and management of your assets and maintenance work orders. It’s geolocation meets asset management. Very cool.
Also, latitude and longitude no longer need to be defined as Custom Attributes now that they have been promoted to defined fields on the Location page. Update GIS on Installation Options, associate with the appropriate Asset Management or Maintenance Management business unit, define latitude and longitude settings for your locations, tie your asset or work order to a location and you are in business. If only Little Bo Peep had the PeopleSoft Financials 9.1 Feature Pack, she might have known where to look for her sheep.
To me, someone who swims in asset management technology all day long, this is a massively welcome addition.
If you have questions about what all this means or what it can do for your organization, drop me an email and I’ll be happy to chat with you. There’s a lot of value here, but often that means a lot of questions about compatibility with your apps and organization. I can help.
