11 IT Innovations for 2011

11 IT Innovations for 2011

Pete Swabey over at Information Age interviewed analyst and author Vinnie Mirchandani (@dealarchitect on Twitter) and others to compile a list of 11 ideas to shape IT strategy and spending in 2011.  The ideas range from iterative (#1) to fairly revolutionary (#4, #9):

1. Use the Internet as your WAN

2. Allow staff to use their own laptops

3. Hire educators in the IT department

4. Use Facebook as a shop front

5. Find out when your customers are in store

6. Set up an IT ‘skunkworks’

7. Sell your own software

8. Build an internal app store

9. Reuse the heat from your data centre

10. Use fresh air cooling

11. Spin your own web of linked data

Mirchandani contributed to #7.  In his own words:

As a clarification, I contributed to item 7. I meant every business should be thinking of its own version of “smart product” – not just software, but also other embedded technology as I wrote a few weeks ago in The Phenomenon of the Technology “Buyor”

Anything you see left off the list?
