Linkology: The Best of the Internet for 1/28/11

On Fridays, I normally post a brief and usually pointless anecdote, followed by some interesting links I culled during the week.

I’m not going to do that today.

Today is about a video.  It was shot by Kristian Anderson of Sydney, Australia.  Kristian is 34 years old.  He’s a happily married husband and father of two children.

And he has liver cancer.

Undergoing intensive chemotherapy, Kristian is, in his own words, a difficult person to be around.  After his diagnosis, his wife, Rachel, had to go back to work while simultaneously caring for their two young boys.  And she had to deal with her sick husband’s plight on a daily basis.

For Rachel’s recent birthday, Kristian used his movie editing skills to make her a video birthday card.  It was less a card and more a thank you gesture to his wife, for putting up with him and, more importantly, being who she is.  It’s a declaration of love.

With help from a local Sydney radio station, Kristian was able to contact actor Hugh Jackman (Rachel’s favorite) and well as New Zealand Prime Minister John Key to do cameos.

Kristian speaks no words in the video,  instead using placards to convey his emotions.  ‘Marry Me’, by the band Train, provides the soundtrack.

Says Kristian about the video’s recent viral popularity:

“Any love story has a universal theme of loss or possibility of loss, and staying with the person that you found that’s right for you. I think that’s the reason people have responded so well to the video. It’s something that everyone is going to have to face sooner or later.”
