Apple, reporting just upwards of $20 billion in revenue and $4.3 billion in profit:
Apple sold 3.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 27 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.05 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 11 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.
Look at that iPhone number. Absolutely staggering, especially considering Apple is currently tied to one mobile carrier in the US market and offers one new handset model. Imagine what will happen when the iPhone gets on other carriers (read: Verizon) and perhaps offers handsets scaled to different market segments. I do believe that while Android is an excellent competitor, it’s a bit early to call the fight in Android’s favor. Let’s at least give both platforms similar market conditions.
During the conference call, by the way, Apple chief Steve Jobs made an uncharacteristic appearance (I guess a $20B quarter is a good enough reason) and took some time to fire a few shots at the state tablet and smartphone markets as well as the whole open v. closed argument that surrounds Android v. iOS debates. It’s classic Jobs, and instead of transcribing the quips and letting you read them, I’ll let you enjoy your coffee and listen for yourself.
Competition — it’s a wondrous thing.
